Top 10 plants and their main characteristics

1. Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens)

  • N° 1 at removing airborne toxins
  • regulates air humidity
  • effective at removing salt from soil
  • easy to take care of and very resistant to pests
  • enjoys semi-sun and 18 – 23°C

2. Lady Palm (Rhapsis excelsa)

  • easy to care of
  • very resistant to pests
  • grows slowly
  • enjoys semi-sun
  • 15 – 21°C, not less than 10°C

3. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)

  • can grow up to 6 ft.
  • more resistant to pests than the areca palm
  • very effective at removing airborne chemicals
  • excellent humidifier
  • enjoys semi-sun
  • 15 – 24°C, not less than 10°C

4. Rubber Plant (Ficus robusta)

  • requires little light and can tolerate lower temperatures
  • especially effective at removing the ubiquitous chemical formaldehyde from the air
  • it can grow to 8 ft
  • enjoys semi-sun to semi-shade
  • 15 – 27 °C, 5°C for short periods.

5. Dracaena “Janet Craig” (Dracaena deremensis “Janet Craig”)

  • very effective at removing trichloroethylene from the air (chemical emitted by photocopiers and similar devices)
  • can grow to 10 ft., the smaller “Compacta” variety reaches only 1-3 ft.
  • enjoys semi-shade

6. English Ivy (Hedera helix)

  • grows well in hanging baskets
  • benefits from some time outdoors in the spring or summer
  • especially good at removing formaldehyde from the air
  • enjoys semi-sun to semi-shade
  • 15 – 21 °C, at night 10 – 15 °C

7. Dwarf Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii)

  • maximum height of 6 ft. and grows slowly
  • thrives without much light and can survive for decades.
  • very effective at removing xylene from the air (chemical emitted from caulking, adhesives, floor coverings, wall coverings, paints, and particle board)
  • enjoys 15 – 24°C, but not below 10°C

8. Ficus Alii (Ficus macleilandii)

  • grows three ways: one solitary plant, a bush (with multiple stems from one pot), and braided (with multiple stems intertwined)
  • may molt some of its leaves until they adapt to a new space
  • 15 – 24 °C, and 13 – 20 °C at nights

9. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata “Bostoniensis”)

  • grows lush foliage but does not flower
  • best grown in a hanging basket or on a pedestal
  • highly effective at removing chemicals and humidifying
  • requires more attention than the previous plants
  • should be misted regularly
  • enjoys 18 – 24 °C, and 10 – 18 °C at night

10. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.)

  • white shell-like flowers
  • successfully bloom indoors
  • easy to take care of
  • excellent at removing chemicals
  • enjoys 15 – 24 °C, 12 – 20 °C at night
